A metaphor for dealing with cancer: preparation, trust…and chance:
The Without A Net concerts are a balance of planning, trust and chance—a metaphor for how we deal with cancer.
No one ever rehearses having cancer. When you receive a cancer diagnosis, you want to surround yourself with experts who collaborate on care plan to get you well. But there are never any promises for the outcome.
Similarly, Without A Net brings together experienced musicians who collaborate on a set list. They know what songs they will perform and in what keys—but they purposely do not rehearse. Instead, they bring their skill and expertise to live in the moment. Part plan and part improvisation. And like life—like dealing with cancer—there are no promises for the outcome. It’s playing without a net.
“This is a very unusual event, where everyone—performers and audience—have shared in the experience of cancer,” said Arny Spielberg, who organizes Without A Net together with his wife, Pam. “Every single person in the room is tuned into the moment and to each other. None of us—including the musicians—knows for sure how things will turn out, but we’re ready to support each other and go there together—just like the cancer journey.”
